Apa Villa in Illuketia, the sister property of Apa Villa Thalpe, is a Ceylonese garden revisited. British maps of the early 1800s show the estate as a major plantation 8 km inland from Galle Fort. It is owned by Hans Hoefer, the founder and publisher of Insight guides. The villa has been rated as one of the 5 BEST Plantation Houses worldwide by The Independent newspaper UK and featured in Conde Nast Traveller, The Times of London and many publications worldwide. Enter Illuketia and you retire into a tranquil setting that is complemented by the trill of cicadas, musical bird calls and whooping sounds of silver-haired monkeys above. Be prepared to be part of nature and close to the Sinhalese village culture. The old plantation house is completely rebuilt on the foundations of the original bungalow and is set in seven acres of mature gardens surrounded by tea and paddy fields. There are 6 luxurious suites in total; four in the main house set around a central courtyard pool and two air-conditioned suites at the Pond House, a separate and private unit overlooking the lotus pond. There is also a brand new 25 metre (75 ft) swimming pool set among beautiful tropical trees and flowering shrubs.

The Main House has 4 luxurious bedrooms/suites ( Lotus, Citronella (Air Conditioned), Waterlily and Hibiscus). On either side of the pool are the three bedrooms/suites each with ensuite facilities. All three rooms/suites have a distinctive feel and have an antique four poster bed with pretty white netting and luxurious bedspreads. The Master Bedroom has its own romantic balcony spread with thick lounge cushions and overlooks paddy fields. The ensuite bathroom, is decorated with tiles from Turkey and has twin basins, toilet and bidet. There is a hidden walk-in wardrobe in the bedroom. The second guest room has an outdoor terrace with a view to the estate's ginger, heliconias and numerous fruit trees. The third room bounds the central fish pond. The Pond House - complete with Butler service! is situated at the bottom of the garden, hidden from view of the main house, offers total seclusion, should you require. The central entrance passage leads to the lily pond adorned with blue and purple lilies. It is truly a magnificent sight. There are two luxurious suites (Air Conditioned) with 4 poster beds and en-suite facilities. The pretty floral bedspreads and the white nets draped over the beds, makes the Pond House a perfect romantic retreat. Your personal butler will attend to all your needs, and you may never need to leave your suite! Guests may rent the Main House (4 rooms) and the Pond House together - ideal for up 12 people Smaller parties may rent the Main House or the Pond House. And couples may rent a suite. If rented separately, guests should be aware that the communal areas such as the sitting room, the pool and the gardens may be shared with other guests.

The main house is of a grand scale with a huge hall surrounded by nine antique carved temple doors. Beautifully decorated with two chandeliers, red Chinese lacquer cabinets and giant bamboo sofas, the hall spills out to a large verandah, complete with planter's chairs to rest your legs. At sunset and evenings, the theatre of nature is acted out from this vantage point. An inner courtyard with fish pond and fountain is a welcoming sight. An additional sitting area & Library on the upstairs balcony offers a quiet area for reading and contemplation with views to the surrounding fields. Pretty fresh cut floral arrangements - heliconias, gingers, hibiscus and fangipanis can be seen around the villas and they are all grown in the estate. |

Full-time staff is at your service. Breakfast is included in the price and can consist of western or Sri Lankan dishes as well as an array of fresh local fruits. Additional meals are available on request. A light lunch can costs as little as $6 per person. Dinner is charged at US$18 per person. Evening meals are especially an enjoyable feast and your chef will be happy to spice up the dishes according to your taste. If you are really adventurous, why not wonder into the kitchen and watch the experts at work, your chef will be happy to teach you the secrets of his culinary expertise. Many of the fruits, vegetables and herbs are organically grown in the gardens.

Payment Policy A 15% deposit is payable to secure the booking. The deposit can be paid via our secure server or via bank transfer. Customers must pay all bank charges in the case of a bank transfer. A further 35% is payable 7 days after your confirmation. This should be paid direct to Apa Villa Illuketia by bank transfer to Sri Lanka account.
