Overview

A long and narrow road, through the plantation, leads you to the highest point of the estate where Watta Bangalawa lies. The 100 year-old building, once a cinnamon peeling and stocking store, has been converted into a lovely two-storied residence. The property is set within a 34 acre working Cinnamon plantation, and guests are invited to watch cinnamon harvesting and peeling, and the distilling of cinnamon leaf oil, all of which are native to this region. Offering total seclusion, Watta Bangalawa is ideal for nature lovers and bird watchers. The house itself is simply furnished in a rustic style. It is by no means luxurious, however offers you the comforts and a real old-world charm you would expect from a working plantation.

The Telwatta Bird Sanctuary (with an abundance of migratory birds of all varieties) is a mere 5 minutes drive or a 10-minute cycle ride away. The sanctuary is also home to an array of local and indigenous birds. Thanks to its close proximity to Watta Bangalwa, variegated birds frequent the gardens during day and night with many migratory birds spotted during November to February.

A short distance away is also the only moonstone mines in the world, which are well worth a visit. Each moonstone mine has its own workshops, factory and showrooms, which could also be visited for good bargains of moonstone-studded jewellery!

The popular beach resort of Hikkaduwa is only 10 minutes away.

Watta Bangalawa has a distinct rustic quality, and is possibly more amenable to those visitors wanting to experience eco-friendly areas of southern Sri Lanka. The simple beauty of lush vegetation and clear skies creates an ambience of tranquillity and calmness best enjoyed by those wanting to experience an alternative to the usual tourist destinations of Sri Lanka.

Bedrooms

There are 3 bedrooms of which one is a single room. Bedroom 1 with en-suite facilities is located on the ground floor. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are located upstairs and are reached via a rather steep, antique wooden staircase. There is a shower room with WC and sink upstairs, which is shared between the two bedrooms. The smaller bedroom would be ideal for a single person or an older child. All bedrooms are simply furnished. Mosquito nets hang from the ceiling and the beds are draped with Local handloom fabrics. All bedrooms have a fan over the bed. All bathrooms have hot/cold water. The bathrooms are quite basic and in need of some modernisation.

Though the owners, Anoma and Chandana, do not live in Watta Bangalawa, they do occasionally stay at the property when overseeing work carried out at the plantation. They are the perfect hosts, and will make your stay very comfortable, as well as advise you on the must see sights and the best restaurants in town.

Living Areas

There are plenty of open verandahs with seating from an era past, including the old favourite - a Planter's chair. The living room and the dining area, complete with tiled floor, is bright, airy and cool. The furniture is a mix of the 1950's and modern day, blended together very nicely. There is a back verandah with open skies and a small middle garden for you to enjoy. Upstairs there is a central reading area, with original wooden flooring. Here you can relax and immerse yourself into a book, write letters or simply chill out! Step out to the spacious balcony and the panoramic views of the plantation around you, is a wonderful site. Further seating is available here and is a great place to spend your evenings unwinding with a cool glass of wine and gaze at the magnificent star-studded skies in an unpolluted environment. This is nature at its best......

Villa staff & Meals

The property comes with a resident cook and caretaker. Guests have use of a small private kitchen/pantry, which is fully equipped with modern conveniences including fridge-freezer, microwave and gas cooker. The kitchen is reached via the middle verandah. The cook (who by the way does not speak English) has a separate kitchen and can prepare excellent Sri Lankan dishes for you. The owners, Anoma and Chandana would be happy to assist you with some suggested menus. As meals and drinks are not included in the price you will need to purchase all ingredients. This can be done by either going to a local supermarket yourself or by providing the cook with some cash and she will do it for you. A detailed account of the expenditure will be kept. Linen and towels are provided. Beds are made daily and the linen changed every other day. A laundry service is available (at additional cost, paid locally).
