Overview

This spectacular property is a masterpiece created by Sri Lanka's foremost architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa. The one time rubber plantation house was discovered by Geoffrey Bawa in a state of disrepair. It became his dream, and spent 40 years transforming it into a tropical idyll.

It is now managed by the owners of the Sun House, Dutch House and Taprobane Island and is open as a hotel during the months of December to April. The rest of the year it falls within the management of the Bawa Trust and is open for garden tours and artists to enjoy.

Lunuganga is a serene retreat, hidden from the trappings of tourism. It is for nature lovers and daydreamers! Filled with antiques and original paintings, discerning travellers have the chance to experience a memorable stay in one of the tremendous suites.

The gardens of Italian style with courtyards, water pools and ponds, winding walkways, pavilions and hidden gardens, is idyllic. The enchanting views of the jungle and the lake is a tranquil picture in itself.

Perfect for couples and groups. There is no pool at Lunuganga.

Bedrooms

There are 4 double ensuite bedrooms and a separate cottage with 2 further bedrooms. In total providing accommodation for 12 guests.

The Guest Room (Double en-suite) - Located in the main house the guest room is filled with paintings, antique Dutch furniture and objects dart giving it the charm and comfort of a country estate. This double en-suite room and the bathroom alone paint a perfect picture of Geoffrey Bawas eccentricities. The Guest room gives you a special sense of private seclusion with a small outdoor courtyard.

The Gallery / Studio (Double en-suite) -The studio was originally used to house farm animals. Converted over a decade ago into Geoffrey Bawas private art gallery filled with sculpture, artifacts and art from around the world. This large suite boasts both an outdoor private courtyard surrounded by ochre coloured walls as well as a large private sitting room.

The Long Room (Double en-suite) -A magical room beaming with sunlight and vistas - set on the upper level over the entrance loggia, the Glass Room has over the years been the home of many artists in residence at Lunuganga. A perfect room to read, write or simply relax in.

Donald Friend Room (Double en-suite) -Once the gate house, the upper floor has now been converted into a glorious room with alcove windows looking out into the primeval jungle. Named after the famous Australian artist Donald Friend who was a frequent visitor to Lunuganga.

Cinnamon Hill (2 double en-suite bedrooms) - This is one of the many additions to the original house that Geoffrey Bawa designed. Named after an ancient plantation of cinnamon trees, this 2 bedroom cottage has magnificent views over the Dedduwa lake and rice fields. Set away from the main house, Cinnamon Hill provides guests with the ultimate in privacy and serenity with its own indoor and outdoor living areas and complete with its own butler.
